Fiji’s men and New Zealand’s women emerged victorious at the Singapore leg of the HSBC SVNS Series, delivering thrilling finals and underlining their dominance on the world sevens stage.
HSBC SVNS: Fiji Men Complete Dramatic Comeback
Fiji sealed the men’s title with a dramatic 21–12 comeback victory over France, signing off the Singapore tournament in trademark style. Trailing 12–0 at half-time after French tries from Jordan Sepho and Paulin Riva, Fiji regrouped and unleashed their attacking flair in the second half.
Tries from Viwa Naduvalo, Kavekini Tanivanuakula and Pilipo Bukayaro turned the match on its head, as Fiji claimed their first title of the season and their second consecutive triumph in Singapore.
Player of the match Viwa Naduvalo reflected on the win with gratitude and pride.
“First of all, I want to thank the Lord Almighty for giving us the victory. Credit to the boys for their effort – we worked together as a unit and came away with the win,” he said.
The victory carried special meaning for Naduvalo, who made his international debut in Singapore.
“It feels like playing at home. Singapore is a great place to play,” he added.
Captain Jeremaia Matana echoed the sentiment after Fiji’s third comeback win of the weekend, following earlier victories over South Africa and New Zealand.
“It’s amazing. I want to give all the glory to the Man above. I’m so happy and proud of the boys. We came back strongly, and their hard work paid off,” Matana said.
New Zealand finished third in the men’s competition after edging South Africa 14–12, courtesy of a superb match-winning try from Michael Manson. Australia ended the tournament in fifth place.
Black Ferns Sevens Dominate Women’s Final
In the women’s competition, New Zealand delivered a commanding performance to defeat long-time rivals Australia 36–7 in the final, securing their third straight Singapore title.
The two teams had already shared finals honours this season, with New Zealand winning in Dubai and Australia responding in Cape Town. In Singapore, however, the Black Ferns Sevens were firmly in control.
Clinical doubles from Jazmin Felix-Hotham and Jorja Miller laid the foundation for victory, alongside a try from Mahina Paul. Australia briefly responded through Bienne Terita, but Katelyn Vahaakolo’s try ensured New Zealand finished the weekend with five straight wins and an impressive 218 total points scored.
The victory was particularly poignant, as the team paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the recent Mount Maunganui landslides — a tragedy close to home for both New Zealand’s men’s and women’s squads.
Player of the final Jorja Miller said,
“I’m so stoked and proud of the girls. It’s been an awesome atmosphere in a beautiful city.”
Captain Risi Pouri-Lane praised her squad’s collective effort while keeping an eye on the next challenge.
“Every single girl stepped up this weekend. Defence was outstanding, but we’ve got another tournament in Perth next weekend. Things can change quickly, and we want to do it all over again,” she said.
Canada claimed third place after edging the USA 24–19, thanks to Olivia Apps’ dramatic extra-time winner, while France finished fifth.
Perth Pools Confirmed
The Singapore tournament attracted more than 40,000 fans over the weekend, before England international Danny Care conducted the draw for the fourth round of the HSBC SVNS Series in Perth.
In the men’s competition, newly crowned champions Fiji will face South Africa, Spain and Argentina in Pool A. Runners-up France headline a challenging Pool B alongside New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain.
In the women’s draw, Singapore champions New Zealand will compete in Pool A with USA, Fiji and Japan, while Australia are grouped in Pool B with Canada, France and Great Britain.
With momentum high and rivalries intensifying, the HSBC SVNS Series now shifts to Perth, promising another weekend of explosive sevens rugby.
